We stuffed ‘em!

Many congratulations to our friends and colleagues in England and Wales for comprehensively defeating Labour and the Lib Dems in the council elections yesterday. This Party’s lead over the competition is now remarkable - how depressed Gordon Brown must feel for delaying the general election! And congratulations Boris too!
Our massive national lead is hardly surprising. Tories do things better - more efficient councils, less nanny state, more fair-mindedness. Well done again Conservative Councillors across England and Wales!

Whilst I would definitely vote Tory if I lived on the mainland I think that we should take these results with a pinch of salt as the next general election is probably not for another 2 years and you have to remember that the 10p tax row is still in people’s minds.
Wakey Wakey we have also won the London Mayoral Election.
So the Conservatives have wiped Labour off the map in England and Wales and Boris has taken control of London. This has been an amazing weekend for the Tory party. Congratulations to all those involved in making it happen.
I appeal to Conservatives-NI to capitalise on the momentum gained nationally to promote the party here in Northern Ireland. It is only a couple of years until the next general election and if ever there was an oppotunity to win support for the party here, it is now.
Conservatives-NI are now in a position where they can point to the successes of the party nationally to show NI voters that they are a credible, worthwhile and relevant party to vote for.
The campaigning that goes on in England for the Tories is fantastic and I do not see the same support for it here. There is no Conservaitve-Future group set up which has many young people campaigning for the party across England. If we are to match the success of the party in England and Wales, then we must raise our game to their level.

The Cat says he/she would definitely vote Tory on the mainland I would hope that is the same in N.Ireland. With regards to the take with a pinch of salt comment I can not agree the results are brilliant for the Conservative Party and disastorous for Labour but we must not be complacent.
Mark H makes extremely important points and until we up our game nothing is going to happen in N.Ireland. We should be out canvassing for new members and putting candidates in place. Regarding Conservative Future Mark people like yourself should become involved because there are many young people out there who would love a credible alternative and you could help organise them.
Why do the NI tories not have a local leader like Annabel in Scotland?
I agree with the comments that there could hardly be a better time for the local party to make moves forward. I agree with Mark H & Paul that action is needed, particularly that we need a vibrant youth group (which would invigorate and eventually run the contituency associations). Do we currently have one? Who runs it? It is also correct that we need to be canvassing and recruiting members. Do we have a local strategy for that? It’s all very well the young enthusiasts evangelising for the party (been there, done that) but it’s not so hot when the new recruits drift away due to a lack of general activity & progress at the polls. Which brings me to howards point regarding a local leader. I think howard the problem has been a mentality that says that without members elected to either Stormont or Westminster a leader is unnecessary. However even if all SDLP or UUP or elected reps of any party were out of office tomorrow they would still have a spokesman who would be the leader and would raise the profile of the party. They would be right to have someone in that position. We don’t. It causes problems in terms of being taken seriously by the media but more seriously, of being taken seriously by those people we ocassionally ask to vote for us.
